Kissing the Earth is a sustainability movement that aims to regenerate Portuguese soils that have been destroyed by humans.

We work with nature to provide all the necessary aid to build the soil from the ground up, so it becomes fertile and suitable to grow organic food, food that is sold in local markets at fair prices.

The doors of our beautiful main field are open to the community to learn, enjoy and be part of a change in consciousness.

A private green space that is used for public service, welcoming all individuals, families, and organizations that want to be part of the solution and not the problem. We are in constant search for those solutions co-creating them with our own community, making them feel included in a project that is much bigger than the land where is located, a project that can be a reference on empowering humans to make a difference easily and with noticeable results at a relatively short time.

Please indicate the main themes of your project with 5 key words
Please give information about the key objectives of your project in terms of sustainability (including circularity) and how these have been met.
Please highlight how the project can be exemplary in this context

Our first objective is our compromise is with Mother Nature, we aim to regenerate soils that are damaged by the abuse of chemicals or intensive farming practices.

Since May 2020 we have regenerated 3 different lands, with a total of approx. 1 hectare. And that means, that there´s now enough microbiology in the soil to start growing produce, without any usage of chemicals.

Our second objective is to educate our community, making them part of the solution and with time hoping to help in the transition of the farmers around to a more conscious way of working the land.

In partnership with our local government, we provide several times a year free workshops about soil, composting, growing produce naturally, and more.

Our third objective is to bring the community closer to nature, without the need to travel far, as our farm is right beside the airport and close to big cities. We believe that to make a difference we need to be closer to the audience.

As well that we need more green spaces in the city, so we decide to use our private property to be open publicly to families, individuals, and organizations to learn in the field about how food is grown and provide them with moments of relaxation in the middle of nature right beside their home.

Please give information about the key objectives of your project in terms of aesthetics and quality of experience beyond functionality and how these have been met.
Please highlight how the project can be exemplary in this context

The field used for the public has been designed to be functional but also to be pleasant to the visitors. We have used the cube of Metatron as an inspiration. There are semi-circles, stars, a combo of flowers, aromatics, trees, veggies, and living mulching.

In the way that we use the design to attract visitors, we also organize the cultures in a combination that helps to grow to produce faster and protect each other from diseases.

We want to prove to the farmers that this type of agriculture is not only better for the planet, but can be also profitable. By acting in the community, we can transform waste into material for example with the community compost bins.

As well we believe that nature should be available to everyone, to learn from a young age how food is grown and like that appreciate everything we eat, supporting a long and healthy life.

Please give information about the key objectives of your project in terms of inclusion (equal opportunities, public participation, citizen engagement, co-design, universal design, accessibility, affordability, etc.) and how these have been met.
Please highlight how the project can be exemplary in this context

Here we welcome everyone, including schools around and associations to spend the day with us.

We also provide workshops to the community, every month for free in a way that we can include our own people into the mission of sustainability as status quo.

They can learn from our learning and mistakes, so they can as well grow food in their houses and re-use the waste for compost.

In Portugal, as maybe everywhere else, the price of primary items has been constantly increasing at a speed that the salaries are not. In that sense we want everyone to know how to grow their own food and we want to educate them to reuse waste.

Please explain how these three dimensions have been combined in your project.
Please highlight how this approach can be exemplary

Sustainability: Our project thinks about the future, not ours but our children. We work with nature and not against nature, and we regenerate solid that previously were not fertile. In that way, we can re-use land to grow food but also to store CO2. It has been said, that regenerative agriculture might be the only solution to the climate crises, and we do believe in that.

In terms of aesthetics, our main farm is designed by an architect to use beauty and energy. By using half-moons and stars we not only make a pleasant place to be, visit, walk and learn but we do also use the energy of the cosmos to make our production more effective and healthy.

In terms of inclusions, as we have also explained before here is everyone welcome and we are open to learning with all our visitors.

Please give information on the results/impacts achieved by your project in relation to the category you apply for

We have regenerated one land with half a hectare, previously nothing grows there without using heavy chemicals and fertilizers and now, we are naturally growing food naturally.

Please explain how citizens and civil society were involved in the in the design and/or implementation of the project.
Please also explain the benefits that derived from their involvement.

We have to refer especially to the re-using of food waste. That might be the most important and maybe the measurable result, where we have created already 4 bins of 40 kg of compost using this food waste.

Please explain what kind of global challenges the project addressed by providing local solutions

Global warm and circular economy.

We can locally do a lot with short chains of commercialization, with re-use of waste, we having more green spaces in the middle of the city, bringing health to those living around and making them see in first hand that they can too do something to help the global warming problem, we do that but being an example, a rural place in the middle of the city.

Please highlight the innovative character of the project as compared to mainstream practices in the field of the project.

First is the regenerative part of the equation.

Second, our farm is open as a private garden to the public.

As well as our educative sessions to the community.

The discount is offered to those who give their food waste so we can compost this waste and convert it into our main source of fertilizer.

Please explain to the potential of transferring the projects’ results or learnings to other interested parties and contexts.
Please provide clear documentation, communication of methodology and principles in this context.

At the moment we are currently working on getting off the ground of our app.

We know we can´t physically be everywhere, and we know there´s so much more information out there, secrets that few people know.

So we want to use technology in a sector where most think about tractors, we want them to think about being as smart as nature is. We want to bring people closer, and make this project one platform to share knowledge and bring this concept everywhere, it does not matter if you are using it on a balcony or in a hectare of land.
