Entre les Rives is a mediation project about the french rice of Camargue and its history. Born by the meeting between Provencal and South-East Asian culinary practices, this project offers a way to connect ourselves with this Rice of Camargue by refering to Its part of colonial past, unwell known by the general public.

Rice cultivation in the natural region of Camargue, is dating back from the XIVth century, but the rice industry will know its golden age after the world war II. The rice was back then only use as animal food wherease, during the german occupation, the Vichy Regime order the experimentation of the rice growing in order to compensate the food shortage. Thus, a group of 500 indochinese workers, which were initially requisitionned in the french colonies to work in the weapons factories were sent in the south of France to work as agricultural labour workers. This rice growing exepriment will be a sucess and will develop until the 60's. Today, this story Is not really well known and the amount of ricefields are declining, when the rice growing is essential to its local biodiversity

How can we develop a living culture of the rice of Camargue that carries this cultural heritage ?

Entre les Rives, is a family of culinary objects that encourage people to discover and to cook the rice of Camargue in their daily meals, and at the same time, discover its history. This culinary product range is made of rice packagings for differents kinds of rice varieties, cooking tools, recipes and a digital interface. They are used in two places. In the first time, as a mediation and demonstration tools in public events like the "rice celebration day", and in the second time, at home, in a daily usage. Using these culinary objects in two times allows a discovery in the first place, and a re-appropriation, a perpetuation of the memory in a second place.

Before flowing into the sea on the north shore of the Mediterranean, the Rhône forms a huge 140,000-hectare delta, the Camargue.

In this region ricefields are playing a very important role to maintain the local biodiversity. In fact, the soils of the Camargue are based on a very salted area. An important and complex soft water irrigation system allows to make the soils arable.

As the rice growing needs a lot of soft water, the rice in Camargue were at first grown in order to push back the important amount of salt in the land. Thanks to the rice fields, local people were able to grow other plants.

Today, this irrigation system is benifiting the local biodiversity as many protected animals and plants found home in Camargue.

In one sentence, without the rice fields, the Camargue will become a desert salt land.

Today the rice of Camargue is labeled IGP (protected geographical indication). This label values the quality of this rice, produce in this specific region of France where the geographical context allows its growing. By Hilighting the rice of Camargue trought its cultural aspect, this project allows to maintain its industry that shape the landscape of the Camargue. Keeping the rice industry alive in this region, allows the sustainbility of its local biodiversity.

Please give information about the key objectives of your concept/idea in terms of aesthetics and quality of experience beyond functionality and how these would be met.

Entre les rives project is based on popular cooking items we can find on both Provencal and South-East Asian cultures.

For instance, for Its graphic identity, the rice packaging I developped are inspired by the esthetic of the rice bags imported from South-East Asia. The monomochrom colored prints we usally find on these are combined with illustrations that shows the imagery of the Camargue fauna and flora.

All along the project, the methodology allows to play with historic and cultural elements from both cultures. This cultural meeting is happening in different ways and at different level through four culinary objects :

1/ Reinvent culinary traditions : A double function pestle to make a crispy rice pancake with an aïoli topping.

2/ Play with the collective imaginary throught an industrial product : A cooking aid made with a caramalised toasted brown rice

3/ Eat to remember : A cake mold that create 15 boat slip in memory of the 20 000 indochinese workers who were brought from Vietnam to France during the WW2.

4/ Combining recipes : A donuts made of white rice flour (asian donut) and chick pea flour (Provencal donut)

They are all inspired by popular way of cooking and are made to be accessible to all. They are basic and can easily be setting up.

Please give information about the key objectives of your concept/idea in terms of inclusion (equal opportunities, public participation, citizen engagement, co-design, universal design, accessibility, affordability, etc.) and how these would be met.
Please highlight how the concept/idea can be exemplary in this context

Entre les rives family objects is based on popular culinary knowledges. These items are affordable for a big audience. As the culinary rice culture is relatively young in Camargue, I developped a methodology that encouter the local Provencal and South-Est Asian culinary practices. As a french born cambodian-chinese designer, the idea was to bring the knwoledge that I grew up with at home watching my mum and my family cooking rice in many ways, in Provence, in order to create a "third culture", a new vision of the rice of Camargue.

This project is inclusive in a first way as it talks about an unwell known part of the french colonial history and highlight a knowledge that we can't really find in books, but that immigrants bring them as they left their countries because of the war.

The second way of its inclusivity is that talking about popular cooking skills allows to target a big and wide audience. As cooking is universal, this medium allows to talk about a very particular context and situation but at the same time, help people to get connected to this story.

Between de shores is an open project, that offers potential collaborations with local actors of the region of Camargue. It could be developped as a brand by the "Syndicat mixte des riziculteurs" an organisation that gather many actors of the rice industry in France.

Please explain how these three dimensions would be combined in your concept/idea.
Please highlight how this approach can be exemplary

These three dimensions are combined through cooking.
Cooking is universal. Talking about food is not only about the final meal, but all the aspects behind it. How and where the food is grown, the cultural and economic aspect.

Please highlight the innovative character of the concept/idea as compared to mainstream practices in the field of the concept/idea.

Entre les rives is an open project that can be developped with local players of the rice industry and inhabitant of Camargue. It allows people to share, exchange and see their rice in another way in order to create a new vision of it.

Please detail the general plans that you have for the further development, promotion and/or implementation of your concept/idea.

If the project, concept is awarded, I would create some workshops using the objetcts I designed in order to test them in a real context.

I would create videos of these workshops in order to communicate about the differents thematics.

I would continue the project by creating new object to add to the family.

Imagine that your idea/concept is awarded in the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2022. What kind of initiatives would you take throughout the following year (June 2022- June 2023)

The first thing I would do is to go back to Camargue to show my project to local players of the rice industry in order to get their feedbacks, and try to create partnerships with them to develop Entre les rives.
